Piano Removals Birmingham – Upright Piano Movers
Shift It Man and Van Removals moves upright pianos across Birmingham, Solihull and the West Midlands. We're a father-and-son team, Rob and James, with a piano trolley, lifting straps, padded blankets and a 3.5-tonne Luton van with an electric tail lift, so the piano never has to be lifted into the van by hand.
We're rated 5.0 from more than 460 Google reviews and ranked #1 of 33 Birmingham movers on TopRatedMovers.co.uk. Send us photos of the piano, the doorways and any steps at both addresses, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can do it and what it will cost.
Upright Piano Movers in Birmingham
An upright piano is heavy, top-heavy and easy to damage, inside and out. We move them for homes, flats, music schools, colleges, recording studios, churches and community halls, and to and from storage.
We only move upright pianos, not grands or baby grands. Concentrating on uprights means we have the right trolley, straps and van for them, and we know exactly how they behave on a doorstep or a tail lift.
Why Choose Shift It for Upright Piano Removals?
Two of Us, Every Job
Rob and James handle every piano themselves. You won't get a stranger turning up on the day.
The Right Equipment
A heavy-duty piano trolley, lifting straps, padded blankets and an electric tail lift, so the piano is wheeled on and off the van rather than carried up a ramp.
Fully Insured
Goods in Transit, Hire and Reward and Public Liability insurance on every move, subject to policy terms and limits.
Honest Advice
If a staircase or doorway means a job needs more people or specialist kit, we'll tell you before you book, not on the day.
How We Move Upright Pianos Safely
Before the day, we check the photos for doorways, hallways, steps and parking. On the day, we protect floors and door frames, wrap the piano in blankets, strap it to the trolley and wheel it out. It goes onto the tail lift, is strapped upright in the van, and comes off the same way at the other end. We place it where you want it, not just inside the door.
Our Heaviest Move Yet: A Pianola Up Four Steps
The heaviest thing we've ever moved was a pianola, a player piano with the playing mechanism built in, which makes it far heavier than a standard upright. It had to go up four steps at the new address. With careful planning, the trolley and lifting straps, we got it up the steps and into place. If you've got a pianola or an older, heavier upright, send us photos and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
How Heavy Is an Upright Piano?

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do upright pianos need specialist movers?
They're heavy and top-heavy, with delicate parts inside. Moving one safely takes a piano trolley, lifting straps and two people who know how to handle it, or there's a real risk of injury and damage.
How heavy is an upright piano?
Most upright pianos weigh between about 135 and 365 kg, depending on size. Some older full-size uprights weigh more. Send us the make and a photo and we'll tell you what to expect.
Do you move grand pianos?
No. We only move upright pianos, which lets us keep the right equipment for them.
Can you move an upright piano up or down stairs?
Sometimes. Some ground-to-first-floor moves are possible, depending on the piano's weight, the staircase and the access. Send photos on WhatsApp and we'll tell you honestly whether we can do it.
Can you move a piano to another room in the same house?
Yes. We move pianos between rooms, and between floors where the staircase allows.
Do you tune pianos?
No. A move can put a piano slightly out of tune, so most owners book a tuner a couple of weeks after it has settled in its new home.
Are your piano removal services insured?
Yes. Every move includes Goods in Transit, Hire and Reward and Public Liability insurance, subject to policy terms and limits.
How do I get a price or book?
